Hiking Highlight
Picturesque location on the banks of the Upper Saale, the former Reussian residence Schloss Burgk not only houses historical living and showrooms as well as precious interiors, but is also a cultural center of East Thuringia with its collections, exhibitions, concerts and festivals and is considered one of the most beautiful castles in Central Germany. Impressive, late medieval fortifications enclose a building that hides numerous treasures behind a simple facade.

A beautiful little castle, located in a great area. Placed above the Saale, Burgk Castle can be seen from numerous views. In the castle itself you can experience culture and history and dine in restaurants.

Burgk Castle on the Saale is a castle in the Saale-Orla district in the Thuringian Slate Mountains and today houses a museum of princely living culture. From its construction in the Middle Ages until 1945 it belonged to the Princely House of Reuss.
The castle and village of Burgk are exposed on a rocky plateau above the Burgk district of Burgkhammer and the dam of the same name on a loop of the hall. It is nine kilometers from the A 9 (Berlin – Munich). 😊

The well-preserved castle still has the character of a castle with many medieval details. The original Palas is still completely intact, as is the keep and the two stone bridges that lead to the inner ring and to the Palas. Both bridges used to be drawbridges. A customs tariff table is displayed on the outer bridge under the office building. People = 1 penny, horses = 4 pennies

1975: Til Eulenspiegel
2005: Medieval adventure - life in the 15th century

Regardless of the weather, the place offers visitors what is called "genius loci". Recommend to look at some information about the Burgk and surroundings in Google or YouTube beforehand.

Also absolutely worth seeing is the museum hunting room - kitchen and defense tower invite you to indulge in ancient times

The walled-in and mummified dog that can currently be seen at the staircase in the museum was, by the way, previously exhibited here in the passage. Why it was moved ... I don't know ... Everything has been very nicely renovated for that.
Unfortunately, many works of art were outsourced or had to be returned / re-privatized. Bad for visitors to Burgk Castle ... Nevertheless, it is worth visiting the museum - or participating in various concerts that are offered here.

Very nice hike in great surroundings ... but the Bleilochtalsperre is currently (10/20) impassable due to construction work. Therefore the route cannot be walked like this.
