With a depth of 1,751 meters, the Nordschacht was the deepest hard coal mine shaft ever operated in Europe. It belonged to the Saar mine. Several mine tremors between 2005 and 2008 led to the cessation of mining in this field. Hard coal mining in Saarland ended in June 2012, thus sealing a centuries-old tradition.
