The industrial mining of Grauwacke began in Oberberg in the 1870s. It reached its peak at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century when the newly created rail networks to Wiehl, Wipper and Agger made easy transportation possible. The break on the Hömelskopf site was the largest single break, which had its own crusher and, because it was located directly on the Wiehltalbahn line, was able to load the wagons with the rock from the crusher via silos.

Old quarry on the Hömel. A beautiful trail leads down from Hömel to the quarry.
But be careful, the path registered in Komoot down to the road north-west of the Hömel ends at the bottom in front of a fence.
