The city castle was probably built from 1529-1533, the start of construction is not securely deposited. It is no longer the entire castle, which arose as a multi-wing Renaissance building. Today, only the west wing, the so-called Johannbau.

Johannbau, Residenzschloss, Stadtschloss ... only a part of the castle remains, because Dessau was completely bombed at the end of the war. It was built in the Middle Ages, nobody knows it exactly, but in 1528 Prince Johann von Anhalt built it on the remains of a previous building together with his brothers Georg and Joachim. Builder probably Bastian Binder.
Today this is the Museum of Urban History, which is open Wednesday to Sunday 10-17 clock
