The old Roman road on the edge of the moor area connected the Westrich with the Rhine plain. It was not only important in terms of traffic and strategy, but also contributed to economic development. The Landstuhl, located at the intersection of important streets, was therefore not only a base for military actions, but also a trading center: a hub for the exchange of goods between west and east, north and south. The area was under Roman rule for five centuries. The importance of the region was largely lost again in the storms of migration. The Burgundians, the Alemanni and Franconia followed the Germans. In the sixth and seventh centuries, the Franconian royal courts of Lautern, Landstuhl and Waldmohr were established on the old military road, which are documented. The old trunk road continued to play an important role in the history of the West Palatinate. The former Römerstrasse and later Königsstrasse was soon called "strata regia" and under King Ludwig from 1332 onwards "strata et via imperatoria".
