      Inclusion of a power plant.

To operate the Kaiserschleuse, which was put into operation in late summer 1897, the construction of a machine house had become necessary. There was a steam engine, which in turn powered two machines for hydraulics and power generation. The hydraulic power generated in this way was used to operate the lock gates and other parts, such as pumps and capstan, as well as the pressurized water crane on the west pier of Kaiserhafen I, which went into operation in 1899. The electricity generated in the power plant fed the electrical lighting. The exterior of the decorative building was designed in the style of historicism. The two towers with the striking half-timbered frame took counterweights, which provided the necessary pressure on the pipes. The disadvantage of the hydraulic system introduced according to the British model, however, was that the supply lines were susceptible to frost, particularly in our latitudes.

It is probably for this reason that in the 1950s the lock operation as well as the pressurized water crane was switched to the modern electrical operation, so that the power plant lost its function. The machine system was removed, the building was finally placed under monument protection and transferred to the Förderverein Maritimer Denkmalschutz for use as an exhibition and event building.

The old power plant is located next to the Kaiserschleuse lock
