A tunnel had to be built near Braunhausen for the Bebra-Friedländer railway, which was inaugurated in 1875. Around 85 years later, however, this proved to be too narrow for the overhead lines for the planned electrification. The ridge between Braunhausen and Asmushausen was removed from 1961 and the tunnel was dismantled. To commemorate the former tunnel, part of the tunnel portal was erected as a memorial stone on the city path. The years 1873-1875 and 1962 indicate the construction and dismantling. The Braunhäuser Tunnel was a 293 m long railway tunnel and was built between 1873 and 1875. When the line was electrified in 1961, the tunnel was slit open and demolished on one side so that rail traffic could continue to run on a single track. In May 1962, heavy rainfall caused a landslide on the new embankment, burying the entire line. The embankment was then flattened and the 1 m thick brickwork was finally blown up.
Electrical operation began in spring 1963.
Today, only a portal fragment and a monument made from stones from the former south portal remain to the tunnel - the latter bears the inscription "1873-1875 - Braunhäuser Tunnel - demolished in 1962".
