The presence of finds taken from Roman buildings is explained by the custom, very widespread in the Middle Ages, of using pieces of old buildings to create new ones. The term "pietrarossa" derives from a stone block measuring approximately 64 x 42 x 14 cm, with a central hole, present inside the church.
