A stag beetle cradle serves as a nursery for beetle larvae.
Stag beetles spend most of their lives underground. The larvae of this largest beetle in Central Europe develop in the roots and stumps of dead trees, especially oaks, whose rotten wood serves as food. After five to eight years, the beetle larvae pupate in the soil, hatch after a few weeks and then burrow to the surface. The adult beetles are only alive for a few weeks between May and July and, with a bit of luck, can be observed.
