Replica of an original Roman tower on the Limes. It is free to enter.
May 5, 2016
The Erkertshofen Limes Tower is the only replica of a stone watchtower in Germany.
The three-story building made of hand-hewn limestone was completed in 1992. The tower has an entrance on the first floor, an accessible surrounding wooden gallery on the second floor and a tent roof made of wooden shingles. The basis for the reconstruction was the floor plans of the stone towers found further east. From the fact that no entrance door was discovered on the ground floor, it can be concluded that access was via a (retractable) ladder on the first floor.
The ground floor below, which is only accessible from the inside, probably served primarily as a storage room for food, as the four to five-man tower crew was assigned to guard duty from the nearest fort for a longer period of time.
