"The monument is located in the Gevelsberg city forest. It consists of an approximately 12-15m high rectangular quarry stone column with vertical lettering: U N V E R G E S S E N. The column is supported by wings attached to the side. There is a gold-plated cross on the top. On the back there are later affixed wall plaques of the former Ennepe office.(...) A plaque with an inscription for the dead of World War II was erected in the entrance area.Design: Hans Erwin Nau;Construction management: Peter and Emil Nau, architects.

The panels are labeled alphabetically with the casualties per year of the war. Unfortunately, not all names could be recorded. Dense foliage obscures some of the names listed at the bottom of the panels.

Very imposing monument, somehow also depressing, I cannot describe what goes through my head when one is symbolically reminded of what a tragedy a war is and how many human sacrifices it demands. Anyone hiking around Gevelsberg should definitely visit this quiet place of mourning.
