Maintenon was in the Middle Ages to the dominion of the Counts of Montfort and was devastated in the Hundred Years War and during the First Huguenot War. Françoise d'Aubigné, the later mistress and secret wife of Louis XIV, acquired the reign and moated castle in 1674.
Next to the Maintenon Castle and its extensive park in the style of an English landscape garden, the Gothic castle church of Saint-Nicolas from the 16th century and the baroque church Saint-Pierre from the 17th century are worth seeing. There is also an aqueduct.
