The lower path from the Dörlbacher Einschnitt next to the canal is partly paved with sharp gravel surfaces and is less recommended for cyclists.

At Dörlbach, instead of a dam, a cut into the hilly terrain was necessary. The resulting excavated material was used to fill the dams. This meant that the canal could be routed over long stretches without locks.

Technical data: Length: 870 meters and depth: 14.50 meters
Geology: Limestone, Posidonia schist, Amalthean clay

Almost all work had to be carried out “by hand”, i.e. with a hoe and shovel. The only mechanical support was the steam-powered shovel excavator designed by the Nuremberg mechanic J. W. Spaeth. Up to 150 pounds of powder per day were used for blasting.

Some of the workers' own accommodation was built. 300 sewer workers were housed in the “Dörlbacher Kaserne”. There were also craftsmen for tools and clothing as well as a bakery here.

At the beginning of 2005, a landslide occurred on the south side - west of the bridge. This continued across the entire site (hansgruener.de/docs_d/kanal/doerlbacher_einschnitt.htm#oben).

The canal cutting was saved with gigantic earth movements. The renovation has been completed (n-land.de/lokales/burgthann/kanal-einschnitt-mit-gigantischen-erd Movements-gerettet).

You only really grasp the dimensions of the cutting once you have seen it from the upper and lower paths.
