Aigues, aix or Egue, means water in Latin. The town of Aigues-mortes is very close to the natural park of the Camargue, known in particular for its numerous marshes, of brackish water (sea water mixed with fresh water). The city today is a tourist spot. You can visit the interior of the enclosure magnificently defended by beautiful walls. In the Middle Ages many Canals went directly from the city to the Mediterranean Sea, making Aigues-Mortes an important port. It was from there that, following a vow, Saint Louis King of France decided to take back the tomb of Christ from the Infidels, and launched the first crusade. He embarked from Aigues-Mortes on August 25, 1248. A statue in the town center is dedicated to him.

Aigues-Mortes is well worth seeing with its city wall and the many alleys.

The hustle and bustle of tourists is limited to two squares and part of it in a few side streets. The much larger part within the fortress was hardly frequented.
