This statue of a Black Watch-Soldier is located on the southwestern edge of the Polygon Wood and stands in almost the same place where they made history. At this location, "Black Watch Corner" the German advance stopped on November 10/11, 1914. The memorial is a permanent tribute to the fortitude of the legendary Black Watch Regiment. During WW1, almost 9,000 soldiers of this Regiment were killed and more than 20,000 were wounded.

Opposite the southwestern corner of the Polygon Wood is an impressive bronze statue of a Highlander, a Scottish soldier. It is in almost the same place where the first Battle of Ypres ended on 10 and 11 November 1914. At this 'Black Watch Corner' the British and French prevented the Germans from making the crossing to Ypres. Both parties dug into the ridge.

This monument honors the memory of an heroic Scottish regiment (the Black Watch Regiment) standing up against the German army in november 1914 during WW1. The Scottish soldiers were nicknamed the "women from hell" by the german soldiers, due to their attire and courage.
