The Elstertal Bridge - not to be confused with the same named railway bridge at Jocketa- consists of two prestressed concrete bridges, which are located on eleven natural stone pillars and has a total length of 505 meters and a total width of 29.5 meters.

The twelve arches each have a clear width of 33.5 meters and are 18.28 meters wide. The maximum height above the Elster is 60 meters.

It is particularly noteworthy that the construction of the bridge began in 1938, but in 1940 - after completion of the twelve arches - due to the Second World War, the work had to be stopped. The walls and the road were still missing and the bridge remained unfinished for the next 50 years. In 1990, the work was then continued and completed on 6.9.1993.

Is already an impressive structure - especially if you know it from ancient times as "unfinished bridge" with pre-war status. And after that the world was over to the west ...
The building was certainly excellent, and so you could put the new road on top. There is an interesting documentary about the construction of the bridge (then and after the turn). Highly recommended - as well as the visit of this bridge.

The Elstertalbrücke Pirk is one of the largest stone arch bridges in Europe that was built for road traffic.
Construction of the bridge began in 1938, but work stopped in 1940 due to World War II. The bridge remained unfinished for 50 years before it was completed after German reunification from 1990 to 1993.
