Top cycling routes to Margaretha Windmill (1845), Westerdeichstrich

Tips

  • The village of Westerdeichstrich lies between fields and meadows and is waiting to be discovered. Every now and then, lovingly maintained thatched roofs delight you while you cycle through the quiet streets and alleys of Westerdeichstrich. The historic Dutch windmill "Margaretha" from 1845 is of course a feast for the eyes and the landmark of the place. The mill is a cultural monument and now houses a restaurant.westerdeichstrich.de/westerdeichstrich.php

  • In the rather inconspicuous North Sea community of Westerdeichstrich, the old windmill "Margaretha" from 1845 stands out. The gallery dutchman now serves as a restaurant. The windmill is definitely nice to look at.

Old mill "Margaretha" from 1845 in Westerdeichstrich
It has not yet been possible to determine how long a mill has been standing at this point in Westerdeichstrich. It does not yet appear in official registers from 1584 and 1598, but it does appear in the registers from 1710 and 1712. In 1794 the owners broke it off to replace it with an octagonal grain and pearl barley windmill, ie a Dutchman. However, a large fire destroyed it in 1845. In the same year the beautiful mountain dutch "Margaretha" was built. In 1907 the thatched roof was already replaced by a zinc roof, the codend gave way to a compass rose. In the years 1908 to 1912 add-ons for storage purposes, coal and machines were built. Two accidents occurred between the world wars: in 1923 the owner got one leg, in 1927 a journeyman with his clothes got into the gear. Both men survived their misfortune. In 1962, two wings were replaced by the Neuenwischer Mühle, but wind operations did not resume.
The last miller from Deichstrich, Johannes Glöer, died almost 90 in 1969. Three years later, the owners converted the house and mill into a hotel with a restaurant. "Margaretha" is still an eye-catcher and a landmark of Westerdeichstrich.
