The Totengrund is not only a dream when the heather is in bloom. Even in spring, when nature awakens, the Totengrund is a worthwhile destination. Lovers particularly appreciate it in winter or when it is foggy, as this is when the mystical image appears. Just a landscape like a watercolor painting, almost unrealistic. That's why the Totengrund is one of the most photographed areas of the Lüneburg Heath.
Impressively striking juniper bushes and heather grow in the basin, which was probably created during the Ice Age and is located one kilometer south of Wilsede. The name “Totengrund” probably comes from the barren soil.
To protect the valuable heath landscape, the Totengrund itself is not allowed to be entered. You have a wonderful view from the lookout point. Several hiking trails lead around the Totengrund: for example to Wilsede, Oberhaverbeck, Niederhaverbeck or Behringen.

The Totengrund is certainly one of the most beautiful valleys in the Lüneburg Heath and also one of the best known. Around the valley leads a narrow path. Several benches always invite you to take a break.
