The "Philosophical Rock Garden" in Egestorf was opened in 2006 and has been declared a natural wonder by the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park. It is located right in the heart of the idyllic heath town.
In addition to an old avenue of trees, there are stone sculptures with a philosophical background, such as the "stone of contention", the "stumbling stone" or the "stone that falls from the heart"

In addition, the place has a certain mysticism, because from 1872 to 1944 this place was the cemetery of Egestorf. This is evidenced by some gravestones that can still be found there today.

The "Philosophical Rock Garden" at the beginning of spring offers a very special sight. Then the lawns turn into a blue sea of flowers. The reason for this are the numerous scilla flowers (blue stars) that have spread there over time.

In the middle of the historic heath village of Egestorf there is an old cemetery, which is characterized by an old avenue of linden trees. On the edge there are other interesting tree species, a Luther monument and the philosophical rock garden.

Here, boulders from the landscape have been collected and placed in a philosophical context. You can find a "stone of stumbling" as well as a "stumbling block" or the "stone that falls from the heart". Come and take a look and let the site work its magic on you!

The glaciers of the ice ages acted like giant conveyor belts and on their way from the far north of Scandinavia they carried with them numerous rocks that we can marvel at everywhere in the Lüneburg Heath today. According to the geological definition, a boulder must have a volume of at least one cubic meter. The heath farmers, on the other hand, call everything that two people cannot drag from the field a "boulder" and everything that they can pick up a "reading stone".
