The church of Santa Maria, known since the early '700 as "Madonna della Scoperta", is attested for the first time in a document dated 1163. In 1201 some soldiers destroyed the ancient church of S. Maria degli Angeli and the adjacent Convent of S. Maria di Fontana Coperta. In 1602 the church was rebuilt with the same dedication and the same dimensions as the previous one.

In ancient times it was called Santa Maria di Fontana Coperta, from the name of a small monastery dating back to the 12th century. The sanctuary of the Madonna della Scoperta dates back to 1201 when the church was destroyed and a highly venerated painting of the Virgin was lost. In 1602 the church was rebuilt with the same dimensions and title as the previous one. In 1741 the side chapel and the dome were added and since then, due to the discovery of the venerated painting in a field, it was called the "Discovered Madonna".
The church was used as a field hospital during the bloody battle of Solferino and San Martino on 24 June 1859, which was resolved victoriously here also thanks to the Sardinian intervention.
