La Grande Motte was originally not to have its own town hall, as it was part of the municipality of Mauguio. On October 1, 1974 the time had finally come and La Grande Motte was granted the status of an independent municipality. The town hall was finally inaugurated in December 1982. At the bottom of the "Place du 1er Octobre" there is a labyrinth made of red paving stones, which is supposed to remind of this long-lasting process.
