The old estuary of the Traisen is an interesting sight but not as beautiful as the new renatured one!

River construction sin became new floodplain landscape
The mouth of the Traisen at the Altenwörth Danube power plant (Tulln district) has been renatured. This partially rectified a river engineering sin from the past. 30 million euros were invested in the new meadow landscape.

When the Danube power plant Altenwörth was built 40 years ago, the mouth of the Traisen from Traismauer was moved several kilometers downstream - below the power plant. The river was straightened and flowed like a canal. The consequences for the animal world were devastating, the fish population shrank in only a few ways.

      New meadowland on 150 hectares
This past mistake should now be remedied with Austria's largest restoration project. Like on a drawing board, an area typical of the region was created on an area of 150 hectares with scientific support, which offers an extended home to a large number of native animal species. For this purpose, 800,000 cubic meters of clay and sand as well as 1.9 million cubic meters of gravel were shifted within the eye area in a construction period of three years, creating still waters and shallow water areas.

A prime example of a recultivated river - an impressive landscape - sit down - look - relax with your soul.
