The Knielinger See is located in the area of the old Rhine River. For gravel extraction, the area was used from the late 1950s as a gravel pit. At the end of the 1980s gravel extraction was discontinued and today the lake is under nature protection.

The Knielinger See is designed as a gravel pit lake.
The remainder of an old Rhine arm in the northern part of the lake has been protected under the title "Altrhein Maxau" since 1980 and the large lake in the south since 1989 as part of the nature reserve "Burgau".
The lake borders the Rheinpark with Hofgut Maxau on its eastern side. The Knielinger See is supplied with fresh water from the Rhine port. Over the Willichgraben the water flows into the Alb.
