Historically, the oath square on the church hill in Bendern symbolizes the beginning of today's Liechtenstein.
In 1699, on the church hill in Bendern, the subjects of the Schellenberg rule paid homage to the new sovereign Prince Johann Adam Andreas von Liechtenstein, who had bought the rule from the Count of Hohenems.
The hill has probably been inhabited for 4,000 years, and a church should have stood there in the 6th century. The new parish church in Gothic style was consecrated in 1481. The rectory dates from 1539.
