The witch tower originally belonged to the monastery as a three-story gate tower. This building was converted in the 17th century and served as a dungeon in the wake of the witch hunt. In addition, around 70 people were interrogated and partially tortured in this tower in Georgenthal.

The monastery ensemble is a property of the "Thuringian Palaces and Gardens" foundation. and has Romanesque building features. Many pieces of the monastery were removed by Duke Ernst, brought to Gotha and used there for the construction of Friedenstein Castle.
