Back in the day, when convicted prisoners were given transportation sentences, they were marched from Dorchester prison to Portsmouth in order to await transfer to a prison ship going to Australia. As the guards often were unable to read, various overnight stopping sites were identified by other means......ie ‘When you see the Red Post’ stop for the night!
