Khan al-Umdan is a large trading inn next to the port that was used for international trade. Merchants arriving at the port unloaded their wares in the storerooms of the inn on the first floor and slept in the rooms on the second floor that formed a unique hotel.
The khan was built by Ahmed al-Jazzar in the late 18th century and rests on a series of granite pillars brought from various locations in the area.
