The fishing port of the city of Acre may not seem spectacular to today's viewer, but comparable to many other small ports along the Mediterranean coast. But in the past, Akko was one of the most important port cities on the Levant coast for many centuries: Located on a natural bay that offered protection from strong north and west winds, Akko was an important trading port as early as the Bronze Age and antiquity and remained so in the Middle Ages up to the Departure of the Crusaders from the Holy Land.
