‘Surprised, I remained sitting on my bed from where I had a good overview. During the night, women and girls were also housed in the men’s section due to lack of space. Women, men and children, all mixed together, half or fully dressed, lay, sat, crouched or knelt on their beds. Sleepy and pale people looked at each other with deep-set eyes in astonishment, first hostile and suspicious, later sad and understanding. At that moment, everyone’s distinction disappeared, position and rank, wealth and poverty belonged to the past, nothing remained but man, as he was, without good and evil.’
