Almost vertical cliffs limit the narrow coastal plain on which the residents grow bananas and vines.
Similar to Câmara de Lobos, fisherman families with many children still live here in the narrow streets of the harbor district. Many locals - who no longer saw any prospects for the future here - emigrated in the 1960s. Those who have returned can even be recognized by their red Panama baseball caps.
Paul do Mar is one of the warmest places on Madeira. This area is also very popular with surfers.
