In the Ice Age approx. For 600,000 years, huge glaciers pushed south from the Scandinavian mountains. The local landscape was covered by a 300-400 meter thick layer of ice. The ice masses carried huge masses of stone and sand and rubble with them. As the temperature increased, the ice melted and the rock debris sank to the ground. This is how the Nienburg-Meppener Geest was created.

The eastern edge of this geest can be seen here. Melt water that ran down to the Weser valley washed deep gullies into the Geestrand. A special landscape feature is the "Binner Gorge" that was created during the Ice Age, a dry valley that slopes down from the Geestrand to the Weser. Extensive coniferous and deciduous forests invite you to take relaxing walks in charming surroundings.
