The Gabriele Münter House, which is often called the 'Russenhaus', has been a museum since 1984.
It is open from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays.
It is inextricably linked with the artists' association 'Der Blaue Reiter'.
At the beginning of the 20th century, not only wealthy citizens, but also numerous artists discovered the area around Murnau. The reason for this was the railway, which at that time brought many summer visitors to Murnau. Many of the artists who came to Murnau were enthusiastic about the beautiful lake and moor landscape with the special color and light conditions. Gabriele Münter and the famous painter Wassily Kandinsky, who founded abstract painting, were among these artists.
Gabriele Münter bought this pretty house and lived in it with Wassily Kandinsky until 1914.
This was the most important period for Kandinsky's development. Kandinsky loved Münter's creativity and felt that she was capable of great things because of her encouragement. Münter on the other hand learned a lot from his genius without copying his art.
When Kandinsky founded the artists' association 'Der Blaue Reiter' together with Franz Marc in 1911, he received unreserved support from Münter.
The locals refer to the Gabriele Münter House as the 'Russenhaus' at this time because Wassily Kandinsky was of Russian origin and many Russian artists came and went in this house.
Who would have thought back then that today the entire country around Murnau is called the 'Blue Land'.

The love between Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky was destroyed by the First World War.
      Kandinsky has to flee Germany.
Münter tried to follow him, which was not possible during the war years. Out of sheer lovesickness, she even emigrated to Stockholm to reduce the spatial distance to Kandinsky. Kandinsky, who was already famous at the time, married a Russian princess in 1917. Gabriele did not find out from him and only years later. It took her a long time to get over it. Only in 1927 was she able to paint properly again. She soon returned to this house and lived in poor conditions. During this time she repeatedly tried to swap her own paintings for food. She lived like a beggar on a sack of gold, because only she knew that some important works by Wassily Kandinsky were stored in the cellar. Those pictures were worth a lot as early as the 1920s, but she didn't want to sell any of them.
Her own art was worthless during this time and during the Nazi era it was considered degenerate and was not allowed to exhibit. Nobody suspected that there was a treasure with this poor woman. It was thanks to Gabriele Münter that many important works by Kandisky were not discovered and not confiscated during the Nazi era.
Today Gabriele Münter is valued as an independent artist and is one of the great representatives of modern art after 1900. After her death, she bequeathed her entire collection and the pictures that Kandisky left to the Lehnbachhaus in Munich.

In addition to the larger castle museum, you can actually visit Gabriele Münter's long-standing home in Murnau. A very magical gem with a few selected works, furniture and a bit of history.

In 1909 Gabriele Münter bought the house. Until 1914, Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) and Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) often stayed in this house, popularly known as the "Russian House". They furnished it together, laid out the garden and painted the furniture according to their own designs.

The Murnau landscape, in particular the house itself, its garden and the immediate surroundings, became an important source of inspiration for Münter and Kandinsky. They often painted the view from the window to the church and the castle as well as to the mountain range. Starting out from dealing with the landscape, Kandinsky's painting developed into abstraction.

The Münter House also played a decisive role in the history of the "Blauer Reiter". It became an important meeting place for the avant-garde. Franz Marc, who lived in nearby Sindelsdorf, Alexej von Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, August Macke and Arnold Schönberg often came to visit, as did collectors and gallery owners.
