The Emscherquellhof is a half-timbered farm complex in the area of Holzwickede east of Dortmund. The farmhouse, built in 1801, consists of the main building, a converted stable building and a detached former bakery. In the courtyard of the half-timbered estate lies in an enclosed pond, the source area of the Emscher. The inflow to the spring pond takes place underground from the direction of the main building.

Until 2003, the farm was privately owned and operated as a horse farm. In 2004, the Quellhof became the property of the Emschergenossenschaft in Essen. Until the end of 2005, the restoration and conversion of the buildings into their original state took place for several million euros according to monument preservation principles.

The Emscher rises southeast of Dortmund at Holzwickede (circle Unna) on hair strand at about 147 m above sea level. NN in a spring pond. Strictly speaking, there are several smaller rivulets from which springs the Emscher, which flow into said spring pond. The catchment area of the river is 775.466 km² with a system of branched tributaries.

So this is where the Emscher starts ... right?

In any case, you will find a great courtyard area with beautiful half-timbering and an inviting café, all around reed grass sways in the wind. Perfect for a break and a look at the map and the rest of the way - or just to the sky, to the calm pond water. Or whatever else you discover.

This is where the little Emscher begins. A very nicely restored courtyard offers a place to rest with a café. The way to the source went over a small wooden bridge, but this was closed. There is ample storage space for bicycles and a large car park for cars. A small board provides an overview of the Emscher Trail and sights along the way.

A beautifully landscaped area with information boards about the Emscher. Here you can take a break at the benches and tables provided.

The Emscher rises from a large source, not spectacular, but still worth seeing.
A wooden walkway went up to just above the spring for visitors, but that walkway was cordoned off when I visited.
The physical well-being is also taken care of there, because there is the excursion restaurant "Quellhof" with delicious food and drinks.
And if the bike twitches around, there is a small service station with tools (on a leash) and an air pump at the bicycle parking lot.

From here the view goes west into the Ruhr area:
Out of the idyll .... into the rough accumulation of backyards with all the inhospitable Aldi-Lidl and logistics stalls, surrounded by the car traffic networks.

Gate was open today November 22! The pond is not spectacular, the gastronomy is probably already in hibernation, but the following applies here: the journey is the goal!
