The Breitenbrunner Klause and the associated Johanneskapelle were built by the hermit Franz Berner, who settled here in 1732. He lived here until his death on March 30, 1774 and, until he was 82 years old, looked after his hermitage with garden and the St. John's chapel, to which petition processions soon came from all over the area.

It is uncertain whether a successor moved to the Eisiedelei after his death.
