It was once one of the most magnificent churches in the region - and even today the Propsteikirche St. Georg in the heart of Vechta is an imposing eye-catcher with an impressive history. Its name goes back to St. George, the patron saint of knights and soldiers. The name also points to a knightly founding of the first church by the lords of Vechta Castle, which was built at the end of the 12th century.

The massive brick building on Grosse Strasse, whose foundations date back to 1452, was repeatedly plundered and destroyed. For example, during the "Oldenburg Raid" in 1538, when the armies of the Prince-Bishop of Münster and the Count of Oldenburg fought for the possessions of the County of Delmenhorst. The provost church was also severely damaged in the 16th and 17th centuries. There are still two in the north wall Cannonballs that hit the church in 1654 during a shelling by Swedes who were withdrawing from Vechta at the time.

In the 18th century, the church got its current appearance with the massive tower construction with a Welsch dome. The church was extensively renovated from 2003 to 2007, and the interior was restored in 2018. The church treasury includes a silver Madonna of the Sun and the silver arm reliquaries of St. Alexander, which came to Vechta in 1699. The church treasures and the bell tower can be visited as part of a guided tour.
