Between 1851 and 1962, the White Gate was the main portal to the Marienhölzung. In 1962, the forest was cut up by the construction of the B 200, and from then on the White Gate was only the entrance to a very small and now isolated part of the forest, while the new path (Green Path) was run in parallel over a new bridge. The gate fell into disrepair over the years until in 2007 the Flensburger Verschönerungsverein e.V. managed to restore the historic gate system with the help of donations from the citizens of Flensburg.
