The castle Pottenstein was probably founded in the 11th century by Botho of Carinthia and was originally to secure the area between Obermain and Pegnitz owned by the Babenberg Margrave of Schweinfurt. It is now a privately owned and populated museum after almost 700 years of membership of the Bamberg bishopric. Even a holiday apartment is set up in the Belétage des Palas.

The Franconian Switzerland and especially the area around the rock town of Pottenstein is not unjustly considered one of the most beautiful hiking areas in Germany. Untouched nature, rugged rock valleys and extensive Jurahochflächen offer ideal conditions for every taste and every level of difficulty. The hiker is accompanied by many man-made and traditional buildings. It is the land of bizarre rock formations, valleys, caves and mills. The castle Pottenstein lies high on a rock massif. From the surrounding plateaus you have a great view of the castle and the rock town of Pottenstein.

With over 1000 years, Pottenstein Castle is the oldest castle in the Free State of Bavaria. The ascent from the lower castle to the upper castle and the old walls are very romantic. The exhibition includes historical finds from the history of the castle.
The view from the upper castle is fascinating-terrific.
