The name Mamelis is mentioned as early as the 11th century as Moremes and Morismahil; in the 13th century as Mamelmes and in the 14th century as Mameles. The hamlet originated in the valley of the Selzerbeek from an early medieval mining company, the core of which may still exist in the current Hof te Mamelis. Depending on this court, some farms and a water mill arose on the old road from Maastricht to Aachen - perhaps originally Roman Oude Akerweg. Until the construction of the new Maastricht-Vaals road in 1824, the current Rijksweg or N278, this settlement had the character of a street village. However, the new road, which was built on site on a dike, has cut the hamlet in half. The court with two farms and the water mill were isolated as a result, because immediately behind this complex is the stream that forms the border with Germany. The isolated group can be regarded as a unit due to the mutual location of the buildings. Moreover, it is precisely these buildings that have the most significance in historical and architectural terms.

      Beautiful, quiet and idyllic.

This ford connects the Dutch cycle path network with the German one.
You don't have to drive through the water.
