The Horstsee Dam is the oldest and most famous of the Wermsdorf ponds. It was established as a fishpond in 1500 and has been state-owned since 1580. Its name comes from a prominent island in the middle of the pond, formerly known as the "Horst." Even today, the dam's primary use is fishing.
The Horstsee Dam has two earth dams. It impounds the Saubach stream, a second-order watercourse. The dam's storage capacity is approximately 1.4 million cubic meters.
