The "splendide Vallée" actually refers to the valley of the Ijse. It also concerns the 7 king ponds, of which 6 are dry and only the right one still has water.
The King's Ponds were built at the end of the 19th century at the request of Leopold II. They were originally fish ponds. The series of 8 ponds is fed by the young IJse and by sources, but today they are quite distant. The more open ponds have an exuberant vegetation of reed, cattail, yellow iris (symbol of Brussels) and reed grasses
