Tips

  • The collegiate church in Enger dates from the 14th century. However, the location itself is much older and goes back to the time of Widukind, around the year 800.
    So it couldn't be more apt that even Widukind is said to have founded the church himself and even more: to be buried here as well. It will probably never be proven definitively, but at least some documents, finds and the spatial reference to Mathilde, who was born a few years later, indicate that the imposing sarcophagus in the chancel actually contains the bones of Duke Widukind of Saxony!
    If you have the opportunity, you should definitely take a look inside. Widukind's grave is BEHIND the altar. You can get a perfect view of it over steps.
    The church is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. I don't know the other opening times.

  • << The Collegiate Church >>"... The goal of many visitors to the Widukindstadt Enger is the historic collegiate church with its treasures:
    +++ the tomb of the Saxon Duke Widukind
    +++ the three-winged carved altar and
    +++ the magnificent pulpit
    The collegiate church in its current form dates from the middle of the 14th century. It was fully restored between 1970 and 1973. In this context, archaeological excavations were carried out and it was discovered that there were four previous buildings. The oldest is from around 800, during Widukind's lifetime. In the 11th century the church received the transept, choir bay and the apse in Romanesque style. In the 14th century, the partially destroyed church was built as a Gothic building with a shortened nave.
    The Saxon aristocrat has been its founder since the 10th century, and people have believed to have his grave here since the 12th century. During the excavations in the choir of the church, three graves were found in the center. There are three related men, the founding family. They were buried around the year 800. It is believed that the central grave in the middle could actually be Widukind's burial place.
    A special feature of the church is its free-standing tower. According to the legend, this peculiarity leads back to a competition initiated by Widukind. After that he wanted to be buried where a church was built in a very short time. The Engeraner won with a ruse. They simply did without the church tower and were able to build the church faster than their colleagues in the neighboring towns of Bünde and Rehme. Only many years later was a tower built next to the church, which was raised to its present height in the 19th century. ... "
