Here then was probably the highway of the past ... ox carts as heavy goods traffic ...

An old trade route about 12.-13. Century led from Mainz via Frankfurt, Aschaffenburg to Eichenbühl,
from there we went on to Külsheim, Würzburg, Nuremberg, and Vienna.
The heavy wagons were pretensioned at the Eichenbühler chapel with oxen and were thus pulled up the steep hump to Neunkirchen. Since the teams of oxen had to pass the toll tower, they paid a toll fee for using the route. The original old plaster can still be seen today.
The historical merchant train starts every 4 years in Augsburg, on its long journey he also comes to Eichenbühl on the "old country steps", which is always celebrated with a big party. In 2023 he started again in Augsburg. On this 340 km journey, with 2 weeks travel time to Seligenstadt, the train is on the way with approx. 175 people.

The "Alte Landsteige" was part of a large trade route between the Netherlands and southeastern Europe.
