The landslide 1983 was the centenary event in the Swabian Alb. The phenomenon was probably triggered by days of heavy rains, but no one can tell exactly. The affected area initially covered 25 hectares and doubled 14 days later to 50 hectares (70 football fields). This means that a total of 5 to 6 million cubic meters of earth and scree with a weight of 9 to 10 million tons (350 000 loaded trucks including trailers) went off. Fortunately, no people were harmed by the accident. Even today, the area has not completely calmed down and in recent years has unofficially expanded to just under 80 hectares. Since 1988 mostly designated as a nature reserve and since 2006 "Niatonal Geotop", entering the landslide area is prohibited except for a small circular walk.
