The Catholic parish church Kreuzerstieg was built from 1862-64 as a neo-Gothic hall church with a facade entrance tower and a polygon choir. In 1902 the church building was expanded.

The neo-Gothic Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Merkendorf was inaugurated in 1864. Initially as a chapel, it was later enlarged in 1902. The original construction costs amounted to 6,154 guilders. Anna Kunigunde Friedmann from Weichendorf donated a significant portion, namely 1,076 guilders. The construction costs for the new chapel were therefore kept within limits. This was also due to the fact that the people of Merkendorf helped to build the church. The main altar shows a crucifixion group and has been in Merkendorf since 1792. When the church was built, the crucifixion group was brought into the church as an altar structure. The Bamberg scribe Dennefeld placed it in a neo-Gothic frame decorated with pinnacles and crabs.

Through a facade room you enter the church interior, a rectangular hall with a flat ceiling and four pointed arched windows. The church is dedicated to the Holy Cross. The “name day” of the church, the patronage, is celebrated on September 14th, at the Exaltation of the Cross. (Info Merkendorf Parish)
