The old town of Aarau stands on a limestone rock that drops steeply on two sides, advancing into the river valley of the Aare valley, thereby creating a bottleneck. Newer city quarters extend on the high terrace adjoining this rock to the east and south, as well as on both sides of the Aare, which flows from west to east. The river forms the border between two different landscapes, the Swiss Mittelland on the south side and the Jura chain on the north side. In the north, the terrain rises steeply to the Hungerberg, which is bordered on its northern flank by the Rombach valley. Towards the south, the high terrace gradually rises to the wooded hills of Distelberg and Gönhard, which also form the natural border to the Suhren valley. In the west, the border with the canton of Solothurn runs through the Roggenhausertal and Schachen.
