When the cloud is low or high winds make the high Eastern Fells an unappealing proposition, hikes to Arnison Crag can be just the ticket. Situated above Patterdale and the southern tip of lovely Ullswater, this is a great fell for a speedy Wainwright bagging fix.
Walking routes to Arnison Crag begin from either Patterdale to the north or Hartsop to the south. When you gain the summit, your reward is a splendid view of upper Ullswater, Place Fell and the notched summit ground of Angletarn Pikes.
Its lower environs are delightful too. Grisedale Beck meanders down from the craggy heights of Nethermost and Dollywaggon Pikes, seen beautifully at the head of the valley. From the comb between Arnison Crag and Birks, Hag Beck tumbles through woodland to the farmsteads and houses below. Your accommodation options are many and varied in Patterdale, Glenridding, around Ullswater and around Brothers Water.

Arnison Crag is the smallest of the Eastern Wainwrights but the view to Ullswater from the summit has to be one of my favourite Lakeland views on a sunny day. The fell watches over Patterdale and it really is a beautiful place to sit and have lunch.
