Perfect for an afternoon dog walk that rewards with gorgeous views, hikes to Kinpurney Hill are amongst the finest in the Sidlaws. It is probably most notable for the prominent Kinpurney Tower, the ruins of an observatory built by James Stuart-Mackenzie in 1766.

Walking routes to Kinpurney Hill are short and strenuous, quickly climbing alongside weirs, ponds and visiting multiple kissing gates. The going can be boggy in its lower reaches, a pair of waterproof boots are recommended. Soon you are up onto open, grassy hillside and then the tower and the earthen remnants of an unfinished Iron Age fort come into view.

From the summit’s trig point and view indicator is a grand panorama, with Dundee and the Firth of Tay shimmering in the south and a romantic vision of the glens and mountains of the Mounth plateau to the north.

For a rural stay, cottages and lodges can be sought in the surrounding villages. Alternatively, the city of Dundee is a short drive away and offers all manner of amenities.
