Tips

  • Slotsgården
In 1609 Christian IV took steps to transform the "gaard", which he used as a residence during his visits to Halmstad, to a castle. Parts of this old "gaard", purchased in 1595 as a residence of county councilor Poul Huitfelt, are preserved in the western latitude of the present castle. In front of the castle's building, nine neighboring plots were bought and in 1610, some of the spaces in the main building began to be renovated and began the construction of the "big new house" (current southern longitude). The castle consists of four strings around a 30 x 36 m courtyard. The eastern longitude (along Nissan) as well as the north coast port wing were built in 1614-1615. In the following years, the castle was decorated and in 1618 the southern long run has been completed. Hans van Stenvinkel, died in 1601, is considered as the architect of the castle, although the building itself was carried out by his disciple and co-worker Willum Cornelissen.
Halmstad Castle has repeatedly been changed and renovated, but has retained its character in the exterior. In 1774, the decayed castle church was made in the eastern part of the grain warehouse. In 1886, the eastern part of the building became an extension with a floor and an extension of a cross-section, as well as a stairway street (architect: Sven Gratz). In 1997-1998 the castle was erected and the former pink-red color from 1968 was removed and the castle was painted in the more "Danish-red" color. Before 1968 the castle had been yellow in various shades for a long time.

  • Halmstad Castle dates back to the early 17th century, when Halland was next to Denmark and Skåne and Blekinge. Halmstads Slott was built on behalf of the Danish King Christian IV and is considered a fine example of the architectural style of the Nordic Renaissance, which is often referred to in Sweden as referring to the reign of the busy Danes King Christian IV Renaissance.Especially the slender high tower of the castle in Halmstad with the lavishly designed spire reminds of this special architectural style. The construction of Halmstad Castle began in 1595 under the direction of Flemish Hans van Stenvinkel the Elder, who was at the time Danish imperial master builder and from whose spring several castles and fortresses in the then Danish hemisphere originate. However, Stenvinkel died in 1601 and Halmstad Castle was completed by his apprentice, builder Willum Cornelissen, until 1615.The castle consists of four large wings, set up in a rectangle around a closed courtyard with a surface of 30x36 meters. The oldest wing of the castle is the west wing followed by the more luxurious south wing than the former royal residence. The lower north wing with the gatehouse and the east wing on the riverbank were completed last.
