A rocky, rambling hill to the north of Coniston, hikes up Holme Fell take you to a modest 1,040 feet (317 m). A hill of multiple crags and a skirt of beautiful forests, it makes for a lovely short hike or part of a longer adventure.
Hiking trails to Holme Fell range from clear routes to pathless sections, making the journey to the top feel adventurous. If it’s scrambling that gets you out of bed in the morning, then ascending via Raven Crag in the south provides easy scrambling over big rocks.
Hiking trails up Holme Fell are suitable for the whole family and you can easily extend your hike to Black Fell, lying at around the same height, just across the valley to the east.
Natural woodlands leads to craggy summits
You can begin your hike from a variety of places around Holme Fell’s base and the hill stands rather isolated, with Little Langdale languishing to the north. No matter where you begin, there’s much landscape to roam around on your way up. Natural woodland hugs the fell, making for a particular lovely ramble in spring and summer.
As you break free of the woods, Holme Fell becomes a heathery affair with plenty of rocks on which to break open the flask and dig around for your camera. From the summit, you can see the vast expanse of Coniston Water glistening in the south with the Coniston Fells rising to the south west. Wetherlam is an eye-catching fellow too, on the western side.
Hike here throughout the year, watching out for unpleasant weather and only hiking in snow with the requisite experience and equipment. For sustenance and accommodation, Coniston lies to the south and Skelwith Bridge to the north.
An absolute joy to visit! In late Spring/early Summer the bluebells are out across the fellside as well as a smattering of cotton grass and it's a dreamy place to be. Holme Fell is only 1,040 feet (317 m) in height but the views to the larger nearby fells (particularly the Coniston range) are beautiful.

Be careful climbing up to Holme Fell in the rain, it can be quite slippy!
