In 1822 the first quarrying contract was signed for a quarry in northern Unkelbach, the Dungkopf. A horse-drawn railway was built from the quarry to the Rhine from 1881.[11] 1907 came the end of viticulture, the main employer of the town was the early 1950s to the 1960s, the basalt quarry Dungkopf, with many workers at that time still running a farm on the side. About 30 percent of the nearly 400 employees in Unkelbach were employed in the quarry. The village structure was also shaped around this time by small local craft businesses. Some arable land was leased or lay fallow. In 1970 only 14 workers were still employed in the quarry. In 1997 the mining of the basalt was stopped. The quarry has been idle since the demolition of all technical facilities.
